Ability Battle Hackathon 2018 (ABH2018) – Rules

As a team, you can only enter the ABH2018, if all are informed and agreed to these Official Rules. Therefore, please share and read these Official Rules carefully. When you submit as a team to the Ability Battle Hackathon 2018 (ABH2018), is automatically assumed that the whole team is fully informed and agreed with these Official Rules. These Official Rules are the agreement between the team and the organizing committee of the ABH2018. If the Official Rules are not complied in any phase of the battle exclusion of team, or individual team member, can follow.

Aim

During ABH2018, participating university teams create an open source educational packages, that allow future human movement & healthcare (e.g. physiotherapy, medical sciences) students and professionals to experience and objectify the consequences of sensory and motor impairments, helping students to understand, experience and qualify patients’ abilities and limitations of a specific patient population group during activities of daily living.
This specific patient population group will be announced during the three days Battle Period of the ABH2018 event.
The ABH2018 committee will provide the teams with adjustable physical simulators that mimic the patients’ disabilities by limiting functioning of hands, limbs, etc. Innovative technology provided by commercial and industrial partners can be used to monitor and investigate the biomechanical and neurophysiological consequences of the impairments. Teams develop algorithms to analyze the data from the provided technology and integrate that in the educational packages, together with the used simulators, background information about the biomechanical and neurophysiological consequences and the educational material for lectures and test questions.

As an interruption of the assignment a small contest will take place, during a lunch break of the program. This contest is separate from the assignment, and all teams are obligated to participate in this contest. During this small contest the analyze skills and working under pressure are put to the test.

Eligibility

ABH2018 is open to maximum seven team members of bachelor and master students. The distribution of the team can include maximum, at entering the ABH2018, two master students and one to seven bachelor students. The students are actively participating in a degree-seeking program at an accredited university in Europe. Every team needs to include a teacher from his own university as guidance, preferable with background in Human Movement Sciences related knowledge. This teacher can help all university teams to develop their knowledge about the assignment.

For the small contest only four students of each university team are allowed to participate. The rest of the team is present as audience, and have the opportunity to fulfil the occasion once as help-line for their participating teammates during this contest.

Application Period and Details

The Application Period begins at 7:00 Central European Time (CET) on Sunday, April 1, 2018 (“Application Period”). Applicants must complete the online application form available at www.abilitybattle.nl in accordance with the instructions provided.

The registrants and their respective team with the best applications as evaluated by ABH2018 organizers and judges will be invited to participate in the Hackathon. Accepted applicants will be contacted by the ABH2018 committee via the provided email address for logistics and next steps.

Preparation Period: The Preparation Period begins on September 1, 2018 and ends on December 7, 2018 (“Preparation Period”).

Battle Period: The Battle Period begins at 18:00 CET on December 9, 2018, in Groningen, The Netherlands, and ends at 18:00 CET on December 12, 2018 (“Battle Period”).

Small Contest Period: The Small Contest Period begins at 12:20 CET on December 11, 2018, in Groningen, The Netherlands, and ends at 13:00 CET on December 11, 2018 (“Small Contest Period”).

Presentation Period: The Presentation Period, which includes presentations and judging, begins at 20:00 CET on December 13, 2018, during the Rehab Move 2018 congress (“Final presentation Period”).

Team Participation

Teams can sign in as a group of maximum seven (7) students (collectively “Teams”) with one supervisor (university teacher). The students are competing with their own (university named) team against other university teams.

Participants of each team, including university teachers, are responsible for take care of and making their own travel and accommodation arrangements and for covering all associated costs, including travel and meals not provided by the ABH2018 committee. Teams are expected to arrive at least one hour prior at the venue for the start of the Battle Period. The assignment is fully elaborated at the venue of the Battle, no help/information in any form from outside the team and present university teachers are allowed. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served on December 10 and 11, 2018 by the ABH2018 committee.

Participation fee

The participating teams are required to pay a fee of 1500 euros per team for this event, which also includes the entrance fee for the RehabMove Congress. This fee also covers the meals during ABH2018 and the RehabMove Congress, and two social events, through which the students are welcomed and embraced in the dutch culture as well as introducing them to possible master programs at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

ABH2018 Event Rules

Equipment, provided by commercial and industrial partners, and relevant literature, will be distributed during the Preparation Period.
Adjustable physical simulators that mimic patients’ disabilities by limiting functioning of hands, limbs, etc. are provided during the Battle Period.
Each team must supply their own laptops with all possible needed software.

All work must be original. Ideas, presentation material, scrips used during ABH2018 must be created or written during the designated Preparation and Battle Period. Each submission must be original, of the respective team and team members, and must be their own creation and not already used in any other competition or program similar to the ABH2018.

Determination of eligibility and compliance is at the sole discretion of the judges and ABH2018 organizers. Teams will be disqualified if they do not comply with these Terms.
To the extent that your project utilizes external resources (literature, figures, tables, code-based, IP, or otherwise), all references must be included in the final submission write-up.
All software used by participants must be publicly and widely available (e.g. R, Python) or the codes and algorithms from commercially available dedicated software (e.g. MATLAB) should be easily convertible and interpretable. Please reach out to the ABH2018 organizing team with any questions.

Every team can hand in one final open source education package. Teams will deliver their solutions to the judges and the audience of the Rehab Move 2018 congress in the format of a five minute presentation, with time for questions and answers.
All these packages, including the presentations, will be judged based on the Judging criteria outlined below to determine the best idea/product and opinions of the audience of the Rehab Move 2018 congress. Winners will receive the Prizes outlined below.

The small contest is separated from the assignment, and can contain a different winning team. The winner of the contest assignment will be determent by the team with the most points within the set time frame. The exact content of this small contest will be announced at the start of the “Small Contest Period”.

By participating in ABH2018, you acknowledge the Preparation, Contest and Presentation Period. You acknowledge that you will cover the cost of any and all transportation and lodging necessary for the event.

Prizes

Winners of the ABH2018 will receive prizes dependent on the ranking by the judges and the audience of the Rehab Move 2018 congress. The prizes are non-transferable and final, by accepting this prize, the entrant will be solely responsible for all the applicable taxes related to such prize (if taxes are required). Chances of winning a prize depends on the skills and product/presentation which is made in teams during the ABH2018 and will be judged during the assignment and is based on ranking points earned during the small contest. The prizes are not for transfer or substitution, only exception is at the sole discretion of a sponsor.

Intellectual Property Rights

The documents and scrips written by the teams are property of the teams, but open source for everyone involved in the ABH2018. If the chance arises that companies want to use the scripts and/or documents, this is only possible in consultation with the authors (University team).

General Conditions

If it is reasonably to believe that an entrant has been cheating, deception or other unfair playing practices, or that the entrant annoys, abuses, threatens or harasses any other entrants, the ABH2018 committee or the judges, the entrant can be disqualified. The ABH2018 committee has the rights to disqualify any entrant from the ABH2018, as well as teachers, professors and judges.

Right of Publicity

By accepting the challenge of the ABH2018 and participating in the battle, the entrant agrees with all the rules of the ABH2018 and the ABH2018 committee. The ABH2018 entities will use the name and/or likeness. Also the submitted for advertising and promotional purpose without additional compensation and/or permission in perpetuity throughout the world. This will be done with accordance with the law, unless prohibited by the law this can be changed.

Social media will be used during the ABH2018. By entering the ABH2018 the entrant agrees with the terms of publication of photos, videos and other publication material, in any kind of social media post and/or websites. If the entrant does not agree with these terms, the entrant makes sure he/she warns the photographer/video operator/writer/publicator.

Elimination

If false information has been given by any entrant concerning identity, mailing address, email address, telephone number, ownership of right or non-compliance with these rules (or the like) may result in the immediate elimination of the entrant from the ABH2018. The false information which has been provided is given within the context of the ABH2018.

Choice of Law

The substantive laws of the Netherlands will be used during the ABH2018. If these laws are needed the case will be governed and construed in accordance with the law written above. This will lead in all issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules. Also in behave of the right and obligations of the participant and the ABH2018 committee in connection with the ABH2018 itself.
